Bongani Mhlafu of Dewetsdorp in the Free State has always had a keen eye for fashion and style, but could not always afford the clothes he wanted.
While his mother always did her best to provide for him, there were times when she could only afford clothes that did not align with Mhlafu's personal style.
Instead of feeling frustrated, he turned this challenge into an opportunity to develop his own sense of style and independence.
In this edition, Public Sector Manager magazine caught up Mhlafu who is currently pursuing a Diploma in Design and Studio Art at the Central University of Technology in Bloemfontein.
“I am proud of where I come from, and I look forward to contributing my unique perspective to the ever-evolving world of fashion,” he said.
Below is Mhlafu's top winter fashion tips to help you curate your perfect wardrobe for the upcoming season.
Outerwear: the key winter piece
A good wool coat will keep you warm and elevate any outfit. The versatility of a neutral wool coat makes it easy to layer over various looks. Look for a double-breasted option for added sophistication.

Layering pieces: sweaters and turtle-necks
Turtlenecks are a winter essential. They are stylish and keep your neck warm. A chunky knit sweater or a fine-knit turtleneck can be layered under a coat or worn on its own for a more casual look.

Perfume: winter scents to complete your look
Winter perfumes typically have warmer, spicier notes like cinnamon, vanilla, or sandalwood. These scents complement the cozy feeling of winter and make you feel more confident and put-together.

Mhlafu said with the right pieces, you can easily build a chic, warm and stylish winter wardrobe.
“Start with a wool coat, layer a cozy turtleneck underneath, and pair it with warm wool pants or fleece-lined leggings. Add your leather boots, a wool scarf, and a matching beanie, and finish off the look with a comforting winter fragrance,” he said.
